AN
DROICHEAD BADMINTON CLUB NEWS (16TH APRIL 03)
It was certainly a historic week for An Droichead Badminton
club, when they secured two of Clare’s three leagues
titles in the community hall. This is a very rare feat
and is the clubs most successful year ever!!
The third division team set the tone with a 3-1 win over
Ardnacrusha. (5th and final game not played due to uncatchable
lead) The games were the tightest all year with a very
tense atmosphere in the hall, which saw a good crowd of
followers from both teams watching the match.
A some what unexpected win by Noreen Skehan and Fiona
Fitzgerald over the two strong “Ardna” ladies
was the perfect tonic. The game went to 3 sets and lasted
a full hour before Noreen and Fiona emerged very deserving
winners after a great performance!
Shane Byrnes and Mike O’Brien were defeated in the
men’s doubles, again in a marathon game lasting
for an hour and 15 minutes, which went to the deciding
set.
The game hung in the balance at one each when Mike and
Fiona pulled off the first mixed in another 3 set cliff
hanger. After going 1 nil down in the game they looked
in trouble put rallied superbly to earn the point for
An Droichead.
Shane and Fiona won the 2nd mixed to clinch the win in
great style with a good win!!
After a long year which started with little hope or expectation
the third division title was back in the bridge!
To
complete the wining run An Droichead won the 4th division
title in the community hall on Monday the 14th. The home
advantage for both finals been won on a coin toss was
indeed perhaps an omen of good fortune!
Noreen Skehan and Noreen Ryan lost to the very strong
Ennis pairing of the Healy sisters in the ladies doubles
in two hard fought sets with little separating them in
the end.
Shane Byrnes and Patrick Aherne won the men’s doubles
well.
Patrick and Noreen Skehan won the 1st mixed and Patrick
and Noreen Ryan won the 2nd mixed to again give An Droichead
victory on a 3-1 score line.
An Droichead will now represent Clare in the up coming
Munster championships in UL Limerick.
The Clare Awards will be presented in Setrights of Cratloe
soon and a great night of celebration is expected by all!!
PS (in case anyone is wondering 3rd is the highest division
in Clare and naturally enough 4th is the second highest...
so they’re not too bad!)
AN DROICHEAD BADMINTON CLUB NEWS (6TH MARCH
03)
The
great unbeaten run of the 4th division. team was brought
to an end in Killaloe recently. The home side edged us
out on a score of 3-2.It was a shock result and poor performances
on the night cost the team dearly. The return leg
is taking place in O'Briens Bridge next week and hopefully
proper order will be restored!!
The team made a strong come back a week later with a 4-1
away win in Scarriffs' newly refurbished hall.
A
win in ennis on the 5th of march was a hard fought victory.
Winning the men's doubles and two of the three
mixed secured the win. The Ennis team along with
Killaloe are the strongest teams in the league. With a
spot in the county final already achieved by an in form An
Droichead our opposition is most likely to come from one
of these two team.
The
third division team remains also remains firmly on
top of the Clare league with an unbeaten run. A comprehensive
performance saw off the challenge of Ennis recently in O'Brien's
Bridge. The team won 5-0. But with many more matches to
be played much stiffer tasks lie ahead.
An Droichead Badminton Club News
(28th
January 03)
It
has been a very busy few weeks for the An Droichead Badminton
club. A string of successes by the 4th and
5th division teams being the highlights.
The fourth division team recorded a good home win against
Scarriff. Winning comfortably on a score line of 5-0.
They then had a most encouraging win over title favorites,
and last years champion’s Ennis at home. Winning with
a bit to spare the team played to their full potential
and were in sparkling form winning 4-1. The ladies doubles
being the only game won by Ennis.
The third division team also have a lot of matches planned
in the coming weeks. They followed up on their excellent
3-2 win over Killaloe with a win over the highly fancied
Ardnacrusha team at home last week. In a close fought
affair they kept the clubs winning streak going and won
3-2……
Early stages of the county championships? Yes, but going
so well success is looking like a reasonable prospect!!!
Noreen Skehan , Shane Byrnes and Patrick Aherne are on
both 4th and 3rd division teams
along with Mike O’Brien and Fiona Fitzgerald (3rd)
and Noreen Ryan (4th) who will be hoping to
go for six wins out of six when playing Killaloe in 4th
next week away!!
